How to Use Affiliate Links on YouTube
Unlike TikTok, YouTube gives you several genuinely clickable places to put a link. Here's how to use each one.
Where links actually work on YouTube
YouTube is one of the more generous platforms for affiliate links — unlike TikTok, several places actually support clickable links:
- Video description — the standard place, and the one viewers expect. Put the most important link first; YouTube truncates the visible description before a "show more" click, so anything after the first few lines is easy to miss.
- Pinned comment — a second surface for the same link, useful because some viewers scroll straight to comments without expanding the description.
- Cards and end screens — YouTube's native on-video link overlays. Cards can appear during the video; end screens appear in the last 5–20 seconds. These support external links only for channels that qualify for YouTube's monetization/link features in their region.
- Channel-level links — the "About" page and the banner area both support a small number of persistent links, good for a bio page that covers everything you promote rather than one specific product.
Description link order matters
Put your main affiliate link first, before any secondary links (social media, other videos, sponsor links). Viewers who click "show more" are scanning, not reading — the first line gets disproportionately more clicks than the fifth.
A note on link shorteners and YouTube
Raw Amazon URLs with a visible tracking tag look cluttered in a description. Shortening them is standard practice — just confirm whatever shortener you use doesn't strip the tag, and ideally one that also handles country localization, since a YouTube audience is rarely all in one country.
Common mistakes
Putting the link only in a pinned comment. Comments can get buried under new ones over time, and a pinned comment isn't guaranteed visible on every device/client.
One link for a multi-country audience. The same localization problem that affects any platform applies here — a flat .com Amazon link undercounts international viewers who can't easily buy, or buy through a listing that doesn't credit you. See geo-targeting affiliate links for the fix.
No verbal callout. Viewers skip descriptions by default. Saying "link in the description" out loud, at the moment you mention the product, meaningfully increases click-through versus relying on the description alone.
Forgetting to update old videos. A product that goes out of stock or gets delisted leaves old videos pointing at a dead link indefinitely — links on evergreen content need occasional upkeep, not just one-and-done setup.
