How to Use Affiliate Links on Instagram
Instagram's link rules are closer to TikTok than YouTube — here's where links actually work, and where they don't.
Instagram's link rules, platform by platform
Instagram's support for clickable links is inconsistent across its own surfaces, which trips up creators moving from YouTube:
- Bio link — one clickable URL (or a small set, if you use a link-in-bio page), visible on your profile. The single most reliable link on the platform.
- Stories — the link sticker makes any Story link tappable, available to all accounts regardless of follower count today. This is the closest thing Instagram has to an in-content clickable link.
- Feed post captions — not clickable. A URL typed in a caption displays as plain text, same limitation as TikTok.
- Reels captions — also not clickable, same as feed posts.
- Comments — not clickable either.
Why the bio link has to do the heavy lifting
Since captions and comments don't support real links, almost everything funnels back to the bio — exactly the same structural problem as TikTok. A single flat Amazon link in your bio only covers one product and doesn't localize for an international audience; a bio page listing multiple links (or a smart link with country targeting for one specific product) covers both problems from the one spot Instagram actually gives you.
Using Stories effectively
The link sticker is the one place a direct, in-the-moment affiliate link works well on Instagram — tap the sticker during a Story about a specific product, and viewers go straight there without detouring to your bio. The tradeoff: Stories disappear after 24 hours unless saved to Highlights, so it's good for timely promotion, not a permanent placement the way a bio link is.
What to actually say in your captions
Since the caption link itself won't work, the caption's job is to drive viewers to the bio or the Story link sticker — "link in bio," "tap the link above," or a Story reference, said plainly rather than assumed.
Common mistakes
Changing the bio link without updating the caption. If a caption says "link in bio" referencing a product, and the bio link has since moved to something else, that caption is now pointing viewers at the wrong thing.
One Amazon link, no localization. Same issue as every platform — a flat .com link misses international viewers or sends them to a listing that doesn't credit you.
Relying on "swipe up." Older guidance from before the link sticker rollout — swipe-up gestures on Stories were replaced by the link sticker for all accounts; using outdated instructions can confuse viewers on current app versions.
